What Rebates Are Available?

Southern California homeowners typically qualify for state and/or local utility rebates to upgrade to a new energy efficient water heater.

Heat Pump Water Heater Incentives

TECH Clean Rebate

California offers cash rebates of up to $3,800 for customers upgrading to highly efficient heat pump water heaters.

  • Must be from a TECH-enrolled contractor
  • Project must be a non-heat pump to heat pump installation
  • No new construction, retrofits only.
  • Customer must enroll in demand response (DR) program
  • Customer must enroll in time-of-use (TOU) program

Heat Pumps

  • $3,100 rebate for new units < 55 gallons
  • $3,800 rebate for new units > 55 gallons

Golden State Rebate

California offers instant rebates of up to $900 for customers upgrading to heat pump water heaters.

  • This rebate applies upfront, reducing your initial installation cost

Heat Pumps

  • $500 rebate if switching from an existing electric water heater
  • $700 rebate if switching from a gas water heater to a new unit < 55 gallons
  • $900 rebate if switching from a gas water heater to a new unit < 55 gallons

Federal Tax Credit

The federal government offers a tax credit of 30% of the purchase price up to $2,000 for customers who upgrade to a heat pump water heater. More info.

  • New unit must be Energy Star certified
  • Limit of $3,200 in energy efficient tax credits per year

Tankless Water Heater Incentives

SoCalGas Rebate

SoCalGas offers rebates up to $1,200 for customers upgrading their homes from tank to energy efficient tankless water heaters

  • Cannot be combined with other utility rebates
  • Limit 1 rebate per customer
  • Must be a residential customer of SoCalGas
  • Must be installed in service territory
  • Proof of purchase required

Tankless

  • $80 rebate with UEF of 0.82 - 0.86
  • $800 rebate with UEF of 0.87-0.94
  • $1,000 rebate with UEF of 0.95
  • $1,200 rebate with UEF of 0.96 or above​​​​

Long Beach Utilities Rebate

Long Beach offers rebates up to $1,000 for customers upgrading to efficient Energy Star water heaters

Tankless

  • $600 rebate with a UEF of 0.82 - 0.86
  • $800 rebate with a UEF of 0.87 - 0.94
  • $1,000 rebate with a UEF of 0.96 or above

Tank

  • $115 rebate on ENERGY STAR certified high-efficiency natural gas storage water heaters (up to 55 gallons)

Federal Tax Credit

The federal government offers a tax credit of 30% of the purchase price up to $600 for customers who upgrade their tank to energy efficient tankless water heaters

  • New water heater must have an energy factor >= 0.95
  • Limit 1 rebate per household
  • Must be an existing home (no new construction) and your principle residence
  • Must replace a tank type water heater
  • Proof of purchase required
